Aims: To study advanced mathematical methods and techniques relevant to solving problems which arise in applications modelled by differential equations and integral formulations. To provide a firm basis of useful techniques for many subsequent courses in applied mathematics.
Learning outcomes: Students should learn a set of mathematical techniques in a variety of areas and be able to apply them to either solve a problem or to construct an accurate approximation to the solution. They should demonstrate an understanding of both the theory and the range of applications (including the limitations) of all the techniques studied.

Each week some problem sheet questions will be set. Doing the problem sheet questions is an essential part of the course. Even though these problem sheets are not part of the assessed coursework, in later assessed coursework and in the exam it will be assumed that you have done these questions. Moreover the content of the classes in subsequent weeks will be designed on the assumption that you have done the problem sheets. The homework will normally be handed out on Mondays and is due on the following Monday (there is a pigeon hole marked MA50190 in 4W level 1 for you to hand in your solutions). The problem sheets will be marked and returned, normally prior to the discussion of the solutions in the next problem class.
