Aims and learning outcomes

Aims: To provide students with a basic introduction to the mathematical skills in linear algebra, complex numbers and linear differential equations.

Learning outcomes: After successfully completing this unit students should be able to: use concepts, ideas and results from linear algebra, complex numbers, and differential equations in the context of relevant engineering applications.

See also the Programme/Unit Catalogue.

General information

Organisational issues are discussed in the information sheet handed out in week one.

I hope you will enjoy the course. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any problems. The contact details are given below.

I want you to understand everything we discuss in class. Please identify the topics you find difficult to understand, and discuss them with your colleagues. Please come and see me if the problem persists.

Each week some problem sheet questions will be set. Doing the problem sheet questions is an essential part of the course. Even though these problem sheets are not part of the assessed coursework, in later assessed coursework and in the exam it will be assumed that you have done these questions. Moreover the content of the classes in subsequent weeks will be designed on the assumption that you have done the problem sheets. The homework will normally be handed out on Mondays and is due on the following Monday (there is a pigeon hole marked MA10193 in 4W level 1 for you to hand in your solutions). The problem sheets will be marked and returned, normally prior to the discussion of the solutions in the next problem class.

Lecture notes

A set of lecture notes with gaps is available in pdf format. These notes are deliberately not presented in complete form but have gaps and hence require attendance during the lectures to be completed.

The principal recommended book for the course is D. W. Jordan, P. Smith, Mathematical Techniques. An introduction for the Engineering, Physical, and Mathematical Sciences, Oxford University Press, New York, 4th edition, 2008. See the library link (the library shelf mark is 510.370.5 JOR).

Assessment, exam & grades

Coursework 25%, exam 75%. The coursework will be handed out in week 25. The exam will take place in the assessment period in May/June.
